class summary
Designed with the beginning/intermediate artist in mind, this course will introduce students to the practice of drawing casts (plaster sculptures) with an emphasis on planar construction. Cast drawing was an essential element of classical drawing education, serving as a bridge between initial studies (2d master copies/Bargue drawings) and more advanced practices. The study of casts enables the artist to explore surface rendering, mark-making, and form from monochromatic, 3d subjects, without the time constraints or pressure of drawing from the live model. The first class will comprise a full session instructor demonstration/materials overview, giving students ample time to observe the drawing process and ask questions before starting their own drawings. In class critiques will focus on accuracy, rendering techniques, and hatching to convey form and surface texture. Though this course is primarily structured with the beginning artist in mind, more experienced artists who wish to expand their understanding of structural drawing are also welcome!
