class summary

Keeping a consistent sketchbook is a helpful practice for artists of any level — serving as way to target improvement in specific areas, explore thoughts and ideas, and record artistic development over time. Through guided exercises in drawing, composition, and light mixed media, students will learn to loosen up, draw without expectation, and build a personal visual language.

Over seven weeks we will cover observational drawing, basic color application, and strategies for combining materials in a way that encourages experimentation. By the end of the course, students will have a stronger understanding of how to use a sketchbook as a space for practice, discovery, and sustaining a regular creative habit.

MATERIALS

This list reflects my preferred materials, but you are encouraged to bring whatever you’re most comfortable using.

  • Sketchbook

    • Strathmore Mixed Media Paper, 9”x12” or larger, 117 lb.

  • Drawing Tools

    •  0.7 mm HB mechanical pencil

    • Graphite pencil (3B or softer)

    • Blending stump

    • Plastic eraser

  • Color & Wet Media

    • Small range of water-based paints: primaries (red, blue, yellow) plus black and white. Acrylic or gouache works best with the recommended paper. We’ll focus on accent washes, layering, and using paint to build atmosphere—not full paintings

    • Brushes: 1 small liner, 1 small flat, and 1 medium angle brush

    • Water cup

    • Paint rag

    • Paint palette

    • Low-tack artist’s tape
