class summary

Students will learn a practical and efficient process for painting the human figure from life, progressing from monochrome and warm/cool studies to a multi-day long pose painting with a full-color palette. The first class will comprise a full-session instructor demonstration and materials overview, giving students ample time to observe the painting process and ask questions, while subsequent classes and in-class critiques will cover composition, anatomy, value, and color mixing to provide students the skills necessary for creating sensitive, compositionally sound figure paintings.

MATERIALS

You will not need your materials until the second class meeting- we’ll go over all the materials during the demo on the first day, and there will be time to address any questions you may have about the supply list. Acrylic Primed Cotton Canvases: two 18 x 24,” one 24 x 36”
Acrylic Paint: (37 ml tubes) Ivory Black, Burnt Umber (for toning canvas)
Acrylic Gesso
Palette (I prefer the handheld wooden oval variety)
Palette Box (for transporting and storing your palette)
Palette Knife
Gamsol (small bottle)
Artist Grade Linseed Oil
Palette Cups for Linseed Oil and Gamsol
Paper Towels/Rags
Storage Box (Art Alternatives “Artist Tool Box” is my recommendation)

Syllabus

Week 1- Full-session instructor demonstration from the live model, introduction to materials, Q&A

Week 2- Grisaille (umber/white) figure study from life- focus on value, composition, drawing with the brush

Week 3- Warm/cool figure study from life life- introducing color temperature

Week 4- Day one of long pose from life using full color palette

Week 5- Day two of long pose from life using full color palette

Week 6- Day three of long pose from life using full color palette

Week 7- Day four of long pose from life using full color palette
