workshop summary
In this 3 day course, we will take a deep dive into the human figure as we discuss a holistic and reliable approach to gesture, proportion, and structure. Students will greatly strengthen their drawing abilities by honing their observation, while also learning to essentialize and focus the important qualities that bring our drawings to life.
The course will begin with a series of short poses leading to one 12-hour long pose. During the short poses we will learn how to begin with confidence by establishing proportions, gesture, and structure early, building a solid foundation that will support a masterful figure.
On day two we will set a contrapposto standing pose that we will work on for the duration of the class. We will expand what we learned on day one into a patient, thorough block-in of the figure. We will continue to discuss a strategic use of materials, light and shadow, and artistic anatomy. In the afternoon Tyler will give a lecture on form and light, and we will begin the modelling stage of our drawings, where we will carefully sculpt light and form with value.
We will continue modelling on day 3, and in the afternoon we will discuss finishing a drawing and touch on the artistic qualities of our work.
During these three days we will discuss in great depth a conceptual approach to light and form, structure and anatomy with an emphasis on proportion and the skeleton, as well as employ lessons and ideas found in Old Master drawings. Tyler will guide participants through the drawing process with daily individual critiques and demonstrations. Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to join.
